Ce roman biographique relate l'histoire de Séraphine Louis (1864-1942), une domestique de Wilhelm Uhde, un grand collectionneur, devenue peintre autodidacte à l'âge de 42 ans. W. Uhde devient son mécène et consacre une exposition à Paris en 1928 aux peintres naïfs. Séraphine est bercée par la gloire mais le jour où W. Uhde lui retire son soutien, son destin rejoint celui de Camille Claudel.
